Improving Designs Takes Simple Measures

Equal opportunities for employment, accommodations, transportation, and access to facilities.

New Accessibility Design Requirements

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador amended the Buildings Accessibility Regulations under the Buildings Accessibility Act, with the new rules in effect on April 23, 2018. The changes improve accessibility and inclusion for all persons and create equal opportunities for employment, accommodations, transportation, and access to facilities.

Included in the amendments are new rules regarding the requirements for:

  • automated door operators;
  • van-sized accessible parking spaces;
  • more accessible parking spaces;
  • more accessible units in apartment complexes;
  • improved accessibility in public washrooms; and
  • counter height requirements.

Requirements for Registration

All public buildings, apartment complexes, and hotels that were issued a new building permit after December 24th, 2918, or any building where:

  • the amount of renovations and reconstruction exceeded 50% of the replacement cost of the building;
  • A building addition contains a principal entrance;
  • A building addition is greater than 300 square meters; or
  • The building is reclassified from a previously exempted occupancy.
